I designed the pier to allow for a change in the future to a different mount. To allow for easy conversion, I made the mount in two pieces. The first is 42" tall and is the part that is incased in concrete in the ground. The top of this piece of the pier sits 18" above the floor of the observatory. The second piece is 19" tall and is bolted to the lower section using four (4) 1/2" bolts. A thin sheet of rubber gasket material is placed between the sections to fill in any voids that resulted when the pieces warped slightly during welding.
